Electric Bike vs Honda CD 70: Real Monthly Cost Compared
Electric bike or Honda CD 70? We worked out the real monthly cost in Pakistan with October 2026 petrol prices, including maintenance and battery replacement.
The Honda CD 70 is the default answer in Pakistan. Ask anyone what bike to buy for daily use, and most will say CD 70 before you finish the question. It is reliable, every mechanic knows it, and it sells easily second-hand.
But petrol was Rs 393.86 a litre in mid-October 2026. That changes the maths, and it changes it a lot.
We sat down and worked out what it really costs to run a CD 70 every month, and compared it with an electric 70cc-style bike. Not just fuel versus electricity, but maintenance and the cost of a replacement battery too, because that is the part electric bike ads usually leave out.
The two bikes we compared
To keep it fair, we picked an electric bike that is shaped and sized like a 70cc.
Honda CD 70 | ||
|---|---|---|
Price (October 2026) | Rs 1,59,900 | Rs 1,49,900 |
Fuel / energy | Petrol | Electricity |
Average / range | about 53 km per litre | about 70 km per charge (claimed) |
Top speed | about 70 to 80 km/h | 50 km/h |
Refill / charge time | 2 minutes | about 3 hours |
Energy per refill | 1 litre petrol | about 1.5 units per full charge |
The first surprise: the electric bike is now Rs 10,000 cheaper to buy than a new CD 70. Not long ago, it was the other way round.
Our assumptions (so you can adjust them)
Every rider is different, so here is exactly what we assumed. You can swap in your own numbers.
Petrol price: Rs 393.86 per litre (October 15, 2026)
CD 70 average: 53 km per litre, a common real-world figure for 70cc bikes
Electricity: Rs 60 per unit (your tariff may be lower or higher)
JE-70D usage: 1.5 units per 70 km
CD 70 maintenance: about Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 a month depending on distance, for oil changes, tuning, chain and plugs (our estimate)
Electric bike maintenance: about Rs 300 a month for tyres and brakes (our estimate)
Battery replacement fund: Rs 75,000 for a new lithium pack, spread over 36 months, which is about Rs 2,083 a month. Lithium e-bike batteries are being advertised on OLX at around that price.
That last point is important. A lot of comparisons skip the battery, and that makes electric bikes look better than they are. We have included it in full.
Monthly cost at 1,000 km a month
This is a typical figure for someone commuting about 35 to 40 km a day, six days a week.
Cost | Honda CD 70 | Jolta JE-70D |
|---|---|---|
Fuel / electricity | Rs 7,431 (18.9 litres) | Rs 1,286 (21.4 units) |
Maintenance | Rs 1,500 | Rs 300 |
Battery replacement fund | none | Rs 2,083 |
Total per month | Rs 8,931 | Rs 3,669 |
Monthly saving with the electric bike: about Rs 5,262.
Even after putting aside more than Rs 2,000 every month for a future battery, the electric bike costs less than half as much to run.
What if you ride less, or more?
Monthly distance | CD 70 total | JE-70D total | Saving |
|---|---|---|---|
500 km | Rs 4,716 | Rs 3,026 | Rs 1,690 |
1,000 km | Rs 8,931 | Rs 3,669 | Rs 5,262 |
1,500 km | Rs 13,147 | Rs 4,312 | Rs 8,835 |
A pattern is clear here. The more you ride, the bigger the saving. At 500 km a month, the battery fund takes up most of the electric bike's cost, so the gap is smaller. At 1,500 km a month, which is common for delivery riders and people who commute across a city, the electric bike saves almost Rs 9,000 a month.
Over three years
Let us take the 1,000 km a month case and stretch it over three years, which is roughly how long many people keep a bike.
Honda CD 70 running cost: Rs 8,931 × 36 = about Rs 3,21,500
Jolta JE-70D running cost (including battery fund): Rs 3,669 × 36 = about Rs 1,32,100
That is a difference of roughly Rs 1,89,000 over three years. Put another way, the fuel and maintenance savings could pay for the electric bike itself, with money left over.
And remember, that is at today's petrol price. If petrol goes up further, the gap gets wider.
Where the CD 70 still wins
It would be dishonest to stop there. The CD 70 has real strengths, and for some people they matter more than the running cost.
Resale value. A CD 70 holds its value better than almost any vehicle in Pakistan. You can sell a five-year-old CD 70 in a day. Electric bike resale is less certain, partly because buyers worry about battery health. PakWheels has noted that battery wear is one of the main concerns that affects EV scooter resale.
Refuelling in two minutes. If you forget to charge the JE-70D, you wait about 3 hours. If you forget to fill the CD 70, you stop at the nearest pump.
Long trips. A CD 70 can take you from Lahore to your village and back without planning. The JE-70D's claimed 70 km range, which will be less in real use, makes intercity trips difficult.
Speed. The JE-70D tops out at 50 km/h. That is fine in the city, but on a fast road it can feel slow. The CD 70 is quicker.
Repairs anywhere. Every roadside mechanic can fix a CD 70. Electric bike repairs need a trained workshop, especially for the controller and battery.
Where the electric bike wins
Running cost. As shown above, by thousands of rupees a month.
Lower purchase price. At Rs 1,49,900, the JE-70D is Rs 10,000 cheaper than a new CD 70 in October 2026.
No oil changes or tuning. The motor has very few parts that wear out.
Quiet and smooth. No engine noise or vibration.
Charging at home. If you have solar panels, your daytime charging can cost close to nothing.
Things that can change the result
Your electricity tariff. If your home is close to the edge of a higher tariff slab, the extra units from charging could push your whole bill into a more expensive slab. That would raise the true cost of charging. Check your bill history before you decide.
Load-shedding. Long power cuts in your area make daily charging harder. A 3-hour charge time, like on the JE-70D, helps, but you still need power.
Battery life. If your battery lasts longer than three years, your real cost is lower than our estimate. If it fails early and is out of warranty, it is higher. Always ask for the battery warranty in writing.
How you ride. Fast riding and heavy loads reduce range on an electric bike and fuel average on a petrol bike.
So, should you switch?
Switch to electric if:
You ride mostly within one city
You cover 700 km or more a month
You can charge at home or at work every day
You want to cut your monthly costs as much as possible
Stay with the CD 70 if:
You often ride long distances between cities
You live somewhere with very long power cuts
Resale value is very important to you
You need to be able to get repairs anywhere, any time
For most daily commuters in a big city, the numbers now point clearly towards electric.
You can compare the JE-70D with other options on the SawariPK compare tool, or browse electric bikes in your budget on the SawariPK price list. If you want something with more speed and range, look at the 1.5 to 2.5 lakh range.
Frequently asked questions
Is an electric bike cheaper than a Honda CD 70?
Yes, in October 2026, both to buy and to run. The Jolta JE-70D costs Rs 1,49,900, and the CD 70 costs Rs 1,59,900. At 1,000 km a month, the electric bike saves about Rs 5,000 a month even after setting aside money for a new battery.
How much petrol does a CD 70 use in a month?
At 1,000 km a month and 53 km per litre, about 19 litres. At Rs 393.86 a litre, that is around Rs 7,400.
How many units does an electric bike use in a month?
The JE-70D uses about 1.5 units per 70 km, so about 21 units for 1,000 km.
Does an electric bike have good resale value?
Not as good as a CD 70, mainly because buyers worry about battery health. This is improving as more people buy electric.
How long does an electric bike battery last?
Many lithium batteries last around three years or more of daily use. Check the warranty terms for your model.
